News update - September 17th, 2020
With pain in our hearts we want to let you know that we are cancelling the 2020 edition of Global DevOps Bootcamp. Back in January we started organizing this years edition. We arranged Gene Kim and a cooperation with GitHub and it looked very promising. In the first month we signed up more than 90 venues, and we expected at least the same amount to sign up later. The storyline and challenges were at least as good as last year and we were ready. And then...the world stood still. COVID-19 changed everything and we postponed to October. Now we are in September. We have less than 25 venues left that are allowed to organize a GDBC at their location and even that with a reduced number of people. Experts expect a second wave during autumn and we will face an even bigger drop off.
After long deliberations we decided to cancel this edition. There are two main reasons. The first reason is the large amount of people and venues (also of the first hour) that are not allowed to join. We don’t want to “leave them behind”. The second reason is that we find it morally hard to deliberately put a large number of people in the same room in these times. We hope you understand this.
But...this is it? Definitely not. When in-person can be done again, we want to move forward with GDBC. But now, we believe a new world needs a new event. At the moment, we are designing a new kind of event. Fully virtual and built from the ground up. But, we have quite some challenges and uncertainties to overcome. Main reason is because we want this to be a new, and revolutionary event. Not a virtual conference with sessions. To succeed we need to overcome these challenges first. Most importantly, are you willing to support something like this? Because when we proceed with this, we need you, local people and communities to help out in your regions and language.
For now..Stay safe and take care !
News update - July 20th, 2020
In this vlog, Marcel and Rob give us an update on the planning for GDBC2020 and announce who will be giving the global keynote this year!
We are still planning to go ahead with the in-person event where possible. At the moment it seems like most countries are opening up the possibility to do so. We will of course continue to monitor the situation and are in close contact with the local organizers to make sure we can run a safe event and stay within local health guidelines.
We are recommending venues to aim for a smaller set of attendees to attend and not host the 200 person locations we've seen in the past. We would like to see events with a maximum of 30-50 attendees, if the floor space available still allows the social distancing recommended locally.
The team is working hard in the background to get the platform up and running and creating interesting challenges for this years edition. If you pay attention, you can find a clue for this years storyline in the vlog...
Stay safe and healthy everyone!
